Marcus Gilbert’s father once had a job protecting some very important people. That’s also part of the job description for the Steelers’ second-round draft pick.
Before retiring recently, Jeff Gilbert worked for the Secret Service and guarded former U.S presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. He even was part of the team that guarded Barack Obama on his successful campaign trail.
A massive tackle who goes 6-foot-6 and 330 pounds, Marcus Gilbert may be asked to protect Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers’ star quarterback, as early as this season.
“It was a great experience having someone like my dad to grow up around,” said Gilbert, who was taken Friday in the second round of the NFL Draft. “Yes, I met Bill Clinton and President Obama. I had a better relationship with President Obama. He keeps in touch with my dad.
“I thought very hard (about a career in the Secret Service). But football is something I always wanted to do. As a kid, I grew up watching the NFL Draft. It was my dream come true to be selected one day, and it happened.
